PLANT 2030 ACADEMY Mentoring

PLANT 2030 ACADEMY Mentoring

The PLANT 2030 ACADEMY offers a mentoring program for early stage plant scientists in Germany. In the course of one year, mentoring tandems meet and discuss issues of professional and personal development. Seminars and documents accompany the program to facilitate fruitful mentoring relationsships.

While participants in the mentoring program chose their own mentors, PLANT 2030 ACADEMY helps to establish the contact, get the mentoring phase started and provides guidance to ensure both, mentee and mentor, get the most out of this program.

Why mentoring?

Mentoring is a proven and effective instrument for the targeted promotion of young scientists. It comprises the informal transfer of experience and knowledge and on the individual support of an early career scientist (mentee) by a more experienced person (mentor).

Mentoring is a process that focuses on the protected relationship between mentor and mentee - a process in which exchange, learning and experimentation take place. Potential skills and new competences can be developed.

You want to stay updated on the mentoring program?

A new mentoring phase is planned for 24/45, the preparation is starting mid 2024.

If you are a student, PhD student or PostDoc working in plant science, simply create a PLANT 2030 ACADEMY account and join the mailing list. We will keep you informed on new events an plans for the next mentoring phase.

You will also find more information in the mentoring guide which you can download using the link at the end of this page.

How do I best position myself for a scientific career? What does a potential job outside of academic research look like? How can I keep a good work-life-balance?  Early stage scientists face many challenges.

Within the mentoring period of the PLANT 2030 ACADEMY, twelve mentor-mentee-tandems took the chance for a trustful exchange in order to find answers to such questions.

As an example, one of the mentees wondered what happens to scientific findings in practice and what a job on the political level could look like. Her mentor, working for an interest group on EU level, was able to give her insights both into the everyday business and into science-based political decision making. The mentee greatly benefitted from the mentors experiences and furthermore learned a lot about successful time management.

„Looking back at the beginning of my mentoring all issues I wanted to address were addressed. Now my perspective on the issues changed. The mentoring helped me to broaden my horizon”, says a mentee.

The mentors gained new insights as well. They learned a lot about the expectations and challenges of early career researchers. The mentors describe accompaning and supporting young talents as an enrichment.

I liked in particular “to see that with my small support my mentee was able to grow professionally and personally”, states a mentor.

Overall, the very positive rating and feedback reveals a successful start of the mentoring program and benefits both for mentees and mentors. The initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) facilitates the establishment of young plant scientists and strengthens the plant science community.
