Online Course
Defend your science
Confident argumentation in science
17.11.2025 online
This Event is for registered users only
Scientific research is built on rigorous inquiry, debate, and peer exchange. But many early-career researchers find themselves underprepared when it comes to defending their work – be it during conference discussions, peer review, collaborative meetings or debates on social media. Communicating science clearly and responding professionally to critique is not just a skill – it is essential for impact and recognition.
The course encourages active participation, self-reflection, and provides a growing toolbox of response strategies – designed for scientists who want to speak with clarity, credibility, and confidence.
The course is released in two parts on November 17 and November 24, respectively.
You can complete the video lectures and accompanying worksheets at your own pace.
What can you expect?
Week 1: Foundations of scientific argumentation
In the first week, participants learn how to structure logical, evidence-based arguments and avoid common pitfalls such as logical fallacies or emotional reactions. The video lessons cover:
- The role of debate in science
- How to build persuasive claims
- Communicating complex ideas clearly
- Staying professional in heated discussions
Short exercises and reflection prompts help participants apply these concepts to their own research communication.
Week 2: Argumentation in real-world research contexts
The second week focuses on real-life challenges scientists face – from peer review and conference Q&A to social media debates and disagreements with colleagues. Participants explore:
- Techniques for defending methods and data
- Managing difficult conversations with professionalism
- Communicating effectively with the public
- Arguing responsibly on social media
- Strategies for handling personal attacks constructively
Certificate of Participation
Participants who have completed all videos of the course by November 28, will receive a Confirmation of Participation as PDF for download.
