Course I: Scientific Figure Design

This course covers the ins and outs of data visualization as the first step to professional presentation of scientific data. If you want to learn how to create publication- and presentation-ready figures from your data, this course is for you.

Why should you join?

In this course, you’ll master the art of creating clear, publication-ready scientific figures. The course is divided into two main parts:

Part 1: Fundamentals of scientific figure design

• Learn the principles and dos and don’ts of figure design
• Understand the use of colors and labels and the importance of correct scaling
• understand the use of chart types, colors and labels
• Avoid common mistakes and pitfalls in figure creation

Part 2: Hands-on figure design with Inkscape

• Learn to create single graphs and multi-panel figures using the free vector-software Inkscape
• Follow a step-by-step demonstration to help you visualize and present complex data effectively

Earn your certificate

Participants who have completed all videos of the course by Novemer 4, will receive a Confirmation of Participation as PDF for download.

Moreover, participants who work in a plant research project funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will have the option to participate in an exercise of creating scientific figures using Inkscape and peer-reviewing figures within a group of participants. The specific tasks and the deadline for completion will be presented on the course platform. Participants who complete the exercise, will be awarded an Certificate of Achievement to honor the newly earned skills.

Important Course Dates

• October 14, 2024 – Release of Part 1 (Fundamentals of scientific figure design)
• October 21, 2024 – Release of Part 2 (Hands-on figure design with Inkscape)  & Optional Exercise (Figure Design and Peer-Review)

 Following the release of the course content participants can watch the lectures at their own pace.
